Supported living for people living with a range of disabilities has significantly improved in the Carlisle area, thanks to the opening of a specialist supported housing development.
Members of Cumbria County Council and Carlisle District Council, along with local MP John Stevenson, turned out for the occasion and were able to celebrate alongside residents the official opening of Harraby Croft, which is based on Petteril Bank Road.
Comprising of 14 specialist apartments, Harraby Croft provides residents with the opportunity to have accommodation that is suitable to their needs, along with providing a safe environment with onsite staff 24 hours a day.
The £2.2 million development is a result of an on-going partnership between property developers, HB Villages, Lifeways Community Care and Inclusion Housing CIC.
Mayor Colin Stothard officially opened the building, along with Colin Glover, Leader of Carlisle Council and Stewart Young, Leader of Cumbria County Council.
Alastair Sheehan, Development and Planning Director of HB Villages, said:
“Harraby Croft is a prime example of how specialist supported housing can make a huge difference to adults with disabilities. Having their own home, along with onsite care has meant they have been able to live more independently and integrate into their local community.
“We’re currently exploring the possibility of building more in the region and we’re proud to showcase Harraby Croft as a fine example of what positive outcomes can be achieved for vulnerable people with the right kind of housing and support services.”
Jemima Taylor, Group Development Director of Lifeways, adds:
“Lifeways is committed to providing innovative homes for adults with a range of disabilities. Harraby Croft delivers a safe environment with onsite care staff, while also providing a home to call their own. Tenants will be able to live as independently as possible while receiving the right support.”
Peter Ottowell, Chairman at Inclusion Housing, said:
“Harraby Croft is a prime example of what can be delivered through innovative partnerships that put the service users at the heart of everything we do. Inclusion Housing are proud to be a part of the strong working partnership with HB Villages, Lifeways and the Local Authority that has brought the project to this point. We look forward to seeing how our tenants develop with improvements in their health and wellbeing and will continue to deliver high quality homes for the most vulnerable members of society.”
